”A” rated School & School District
Prairie Vista is one of Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation’s nine “A” rated schools.

P-H-M has consistently received an “A” rating from the Indiana Department of Education since 2011. P-H-M serves more than 11,100 students in its 11 elementary schools, three middle schools and Penn High School. With the release of the Spring 2019 ILEARN results, P-H-M ranks 12th in the state for combined ELA & Math scores in grades 3-8, and Prairie Vista is the #4 elementary school in the state!

*Because COVID-19 shut down Indiana schools in the Spring of 2020, students did not take statewide assessments for the 2019-2020 school year.

Academic Programs

A concept-based curriculum allows a continuous progression through the skills.  Teachers are cognizant of all student needs.  Students are grouped heterogeneously for instruction.  Students with special needs are fully included in the regular classroom and receive support services from resource teachers.  Prairie Vista consists of grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

Prairie Vista is known for its emphasis on academics with a focus on the visual and performing arts through Art Smart, choirs, artist-in-residence programs, musical and dramatic productions and a variety of convocations.

Staff members are continually upgrading their skills and have been trained in classroom applications based on differentiated curriculum, current brain research, phonemic awareness, the theory of multiple intelligences, and authentic assessments.

Honors and Achievements

In the fall of 2015 Prairie Vista was named a National Blue Ribbon School (in the “Exemplary High Performing Schools” category), one of only 10 in the state and 335 in the nation. Prairie Vista received that recognition once before, in the fall of 1996, when the U.S. Department of Education named it a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.  In May 1997 Prairie Vista was named an Indiana Blue Ribbon School. The Indiana Department of Education has named Prairie Vista a Four Star School in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Parent Involvement

The school believes that parents are an essential part of the educational team.  Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s educational program and to get involved in school activities.  Prairie Vista parents are vital partners in the school library, at fifth grade camp, with the LearningSphere and in the classrooms.  The PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization) sponsors many programs that enhance learning for children at Prairie Vista. Visit the PTO webpage to learn more.

Each year the Prairie Vista PTO creates a student directory to help school families communicate with one another. Participating is easy; just use this online form to submit your family’s information. You can sign up to be a volunteer as well!
